About the craftswoman
Asiya Galimovna was born in the village of Zheltoye, the capital of openwork down knitting. Like most hereditary craftswomen, she began knitting at 7.
At 26 Asiya Galimovna married and moved to Kuvandyk.
The school of four sisters
Unlike many craftswomen, Asiya Galimovna learned the basics of the down craft not from her mother but from her sisters. There were 4 of them in the family, and each “spied on” techniques, and then the girls exchanged experience. It was a competition, entertainment and, of course, real training in the down craft practically “from scratch”.
That is why Asiya Galimovna is an almost unique example of a self-taught down knitter, even though she is a hereditary craftswoman. Her mother hardly had to teach her daughter: she picked up everything she needed from her sisters.

Part of a living tradition
The Orenburg down shawl survives thanks to craftswomen who pass on their skills through family, neighbours and personal experience. Each item is linked not only to its pattern but also to the hand of the person who made it.
