The Art Expert Council for Folk Art Crafts

An art expert council for folk art crafts has been established in the Orenburg Region: we explain what it will do.

By a resolution of the Government of the Orenburg Region of 25 July 2014, an art expert council for folk art crafts has been established in the region. Its task is to help state cultural policy preserve, revive and develop the folk crafts of the Orenburg region, including down knitting.

The Council is a collegial expert and advisory body. It includes representatives of the region's executive authorities, specialists and researchers in decorative and applied arts and folk crafts, leading masters, heads and chief artists of folk art craft organisations. Its members also include art historians, ethnographers, museum workers and representatives of cultural bodies, creative unions, foundations and associations whose work is related to preserving the national cultural heritage.

The Council's main tasks

  • To classify manufactured items as products of folk art crafts.
  • To help create economic, social and other conditions for the work of folk art craft organisations and individual masters who make items for utilitarian and/or decorative purposes.
  • To take part in developing a scientifically grounded regional policy in decorative, applied and folk art and in measures to preserve, revive and develop crafts – above all in the places where they have traditionally existed, relying on historically established artistic and stylistic features and traditional technologies and taking into account modern aesthetic requirements.
  • To promote the creative development of craft collectives, individual masters and creative groups, and to achieve a high artistic level and technical quality of items.
  • To prepare proposals for improving legal regulation in the field of preserving the national cultural heritage and traditional art crafts.
  • To prepare proposals for new forms of popularising folk art and the work of folk masters and artists, and to help craft collectives, individual masters and creative groups organise exhibitions, creative contests and other events that raise the artistic level and quality of items.
  • To compile a list of samples of folk art craft items of recognised artistic merit for registration with the relevant federal executive body.
