In the last century, with the onset of cold weather, young women put on wool coats with fluffy collars of arctic fox or fox fur. Today it is simply impossible to meet a young woman in such an outfit. Young people prefer fashion trends, and these consist in using interesting items.
In this and the next autumn–winter seasons, preference will be given not to fur but to knitted collars. They bear the English name "snood", which in the original literal translation means "leash". Tube scarves were already in fashion in the last century. But then they were not as varied as they are now.
In essence, snoods are scarves, but not ordinary ones – rather amusing ones. Today snoods are knitted everywhere – on needles or with a crochet hook. There are several ways to knit them.
The easiest is to knit a long scarf and sew the ends together. The resulting ring is wrapped twice around the neck. The result is a kind of collar. When necessary, or simply if you wish, a snood scarf can be worn on the neck and the head at the same time.
With the second method, knitting is done in the round, continuously. The finished item is shaped like a tube. It is put on the neck over the head and beautifully arranged on the shoulders.
A variety of models
Knitted snoods can be of completely different lengths and widths and of different density and volume; there are models with and without a pattern, plain and coloured.
Snoods can be quite small, in which case they fit snugly around the neck. This option is suitable for wearing under outerwear. Wide and long pieces are twisted several times so that they lie over a coat or jacket.
Down snoods protect perfectly against the cold in winter. They are very convenient to use. In spring and autumn the weather is changeable. When it is warm, the scarf can simply be thrown over the shoulders, leaving the neck almost open. As soon as it gets colder, one turn of the soft accessory will reliably protect the exposed part of the body from freezing. If the wind blows, the multifunctional snood will instantly become a hood. And when the improvised hat is no longer needed (for example, on public transport), it can be thrown off the head with one movement.
What are snoods knitted from?
A warm item should be knitted from warm yarn: wool, mohair or down. But even these materials vary.
Knitting such a scarf from excessively thick threads (with up to 50% wool) will be no trouble. The item will be voluminous and heavy, but it will not stay on the head for long. And there can be no question of two turns in this case.
An interesting scarf can be knitted in a jacquard pattern on circular needles. Fine wool is perfect for this option. And if you want to own a delicate openwork snood, nothing is better than goat down. A soft, airy item will adorn its owner like no other. A down scarf looks elegant both on the neck and on the head. It can be worn both with outerwear and indoors at low temperatures without a coat or jacket. The finest scarf, placed on the shoulders, back and chest, turns into a warm, original wrap.
One of the advantages of goat down is that it is hypoallergenic and does not cause unpleasant sensations, which cannot be said of woollen things.
If you sew decorations in the form of pearl beads onto a down snood, the effect will exceed all your expectations. In such an outfit a young woman will certainly earn approving glances and smiles from those around her. A beautiful, stylish item will give her self-confidence and lift her mood.
