Orenburg Down Shawl Days 2017. The Beginning
How the Orenburg Down Shawl Days 2017 began: a press conference, the "Down Masterpieces" and Roza Gumerova exhibitions, and a scientific conference.
By good tradition, the Orenburg Down Shawl Days are held in October and timed to the bright Orthodox holiday – the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Remarkably, the symbol of the Orenburg region, with more than two centuries of history, long had no day of its own, and down knitters had no professional holiday. This continued until 2014, when the Governor of the Orenburg Region signed the decree "On holding the annual regional event 'Orenburg Down Shawl Days'". For the fourth year in a row, a whole series of events devoted to the pure, light, warm, legendary Orenburg down shawl is being held in October.
So what will the "Intercession Days 2017" be like? Here are the details.
All events take place from 12 to 15 October.
12 October: a press conference and "Down Masterpieces"
The celebration began with a press conference for the media at the Orenburg Regional Museum of Fine Arts – this year's main venue. It presented the video project "Birth of a Legend. Knitting an Orenburg Down Shawl in 16 Lessons" and opened the exhibition "Down Masterpieces".
13 October: a scientific conference
On this day the management of the Shalnoy Orenburg company was especially active in the events: the whole of Friday was devoted to the regional scientific and practical conference "The Current State and Problems of the Development of Folk Art". The topic is acute and relevant. Much has been done in recent years to develop down knitting in the region, but problems remain, and they can only be solved through joint efforts. The most prominent specialists in the industry gave papers, covering comprehensively the issue of preserving down knitting as a craft and heritage of the region.
At the same time, at 13.00, the down-knitting department of the Orenburg Regional Art College held its traditional event.
The busy Friday ended with the opening of the exhibition by Roza Sakhabovna Gumerova, "Everyone in My Family Knits". Shawls of incredible beauty and craftsmanship amazed the audience.
What comes next
A pleasant surprise was the festive decoration outside the Museum of Fine Arts – a huge ball of yarn with needles that you can take a photo with. The programme for the following days promises to be rich and interesting. Follow the news on our website – we will tell and show you everything!
