About the craft

A Young Knitter of Orenburg Shawls. The Hope of the Down-Knitting Craft.

There is a popular stereotype (and we fundamentally disagree with it) that the Orenburg down shawl is purely a relic of the past, a "grandmother's accessory" that has long lost its relevance. Not to mention the process of knitting these shawls itself. It is believed that only elderly people do it, that the younger generation is not interested, and that the craft will soon be gone for good...

As a company whose priorities include reviving down knitting, we constantly try to break these stereotypes, attract more young people and spark public interest. We have already told you about young designersin whose work down items have a special place, and about Orenburg Art College, where in one of the departments you can learn the craft from real hereditary masters. Now we want to talk about knitting Orenburg down shawls directly. So here it is, that very common stereotype: down shawls are knitted by grandmothers and only grandmothers. Young knitters do not exist. Is that really so? Young knitter Nadezhda says no.

In one of the large centres of down knitting, Saraktash, we met a wonderful family of hereditary craftswomen and talked to the experienced knitter Nadezhda Petrovna and her granddaughter – the youngest member of the dynasty – Nadezhda.

Nadya is only 17 today. And yet she has every right to say that she is already an experienced master, who, like other craftswomen, picked up knitting needles in early childhood. Moreover, no one forced her to do it; the girl showed interest herself and asked to be taught. Already at 8, Nadya could easily knit socks and down vests. And her first Orenburg down shawl came off her needles at the age of 13.

Nadya was taught to knit by her grandmother – a hereditary craftswoman and former employee of the down artel. At first, like many, she knitted borders, then moved on to full items. Today, knitting a high-quality down shawl is not only no problem for Nadya but also gives her a great deal of pleasure.

Nadya takes her hobby very seriously. She not only believes the craft will be useful to her in life, she actively expresses herself through it. We can proudly say that Nadezhda is not only a knitter but a real designer who has created several small but unique original collections that have already been recognised, and Nadezhda herself has received awards for taking part in youth creative competitions.

We also had the chance to see and even touch the works themselves – soft toys made using Orenburg down. We also had the chance to see and even touch the works themselves – soft toys made using Orenburg down. In addition, Nadya showed us her works from another field – beadwork – another passion of the young craftswoman. We invite you, too, to take a look at all this splendour.

Nadezhda knows how to knit goat down items well and, most importantly, loves doing it very much. Asked about the future of the down-knitting craft, she gives an optimistic forecast and says unequivocally that she will continue knitting down shawls and that this craft has a future. The young woman believes that interest in the craft must be supported among the younger generation. And for this it is necessary to preserve traditions while at the same time being on trend, aware of modern tendencies and currents, and, of course, bringing in something new.

Nadya's example is breaking one of the most common stereotypes about Orenburg down knitting before our eyes. And most importantly: her example is not the only one. So it is wrong to say that a craft such as knitting Orenburg down shawls is becoming a thing of the past. Our view of the question, on the contrary, is optimistic: we believe the craft has got a new life and is gradually reviving. And such a wonderful person as Nadezhda is a hope for us and for everyone who cares about the craft. The hope that Orenburg down knitting will not only develop rapidly but will also remain relevant for future generations.
