Three Maiden Spinners

Well then, we are publishing a new fairy tale about the Orenburg down shawl for our readers! This time in verse.

Updated 1 min read Shalnoy Orenburg editorial team

Three maidens by the window sat, spinning late into the night,

Says the first one: “I'm so tired of working all the time!

I want to marry the tsar! I want to rule the realm!”

And the second says: “Have you looked in the mirror lately?

He won't even glance at you; at best he'll send you to the kitchen!”

But he'll bring me into his house and call me his wife.

I'll be famous all over the world, and you will cook the feast.”

The third one silently spun her yarn and gathered it into her bag,

And quietly went into the house to amaze everyone with her fabric.

In a week she knitted a shawl, all in patterns and churches,

With a lake with swans and a firebird beneath the churches.

When the tsar-father saw it, he at once led the woman to the altar.

And he arranged a showing for all the kings from overseas,

And rumour long spread about the Russian miracle — soft, warm and fluffy.
