A warm shawl (shal) is a dense knitted or woven shawl framed with tassels or an openwork border. Traditionally, a warm shawl is square and large (more than a metre on each side). Such an accessory is worn over the hair or on the shoulders, folded diagonally into a triangle. In Russia the best known are the Pavlovsky Posad wool shawls and Orenburg down shawls. Shawls made of natural Orenburg goat down can keep you warm in any frost, so they are used not only as clothing but also as bedspreads and blankets. The usual colour of a down shawl is a rich grey, but Orenburg craftswomen also knit snow-white shawls, which are in no less demand today.
