A gossamer shawl (pautinka) is a women's shawl made of down yarn, distinguished by a skilful openwork pattern resembling the finest spider's web. The fabric of such a shawl is semi-transparent and practically weightless. Traditionally, Orenburg gossamer shawlsare hand-knitted from natural white goat down, which emphasises the item's resemblance to the white-silver pattern of a web. Today, however, there are many variations on this theme. The Orenburg Down Shawl Factory produces pink, lilac, light blue, turquoise and grey gossamer shawls that are in no way inferior to handmade ones. Multicoloured gossamer shawls, in which the shades of down yarn alternate along with the pattern changes, look especially original.
